孩子的認生多發生在5～6個月，表現為對陌生人的親近和愛撫，做出回避或大哭的反應。

認生是孩子認識能力發展過程中的重要記憶變化。它一方面明顯地表現了孩子感知、辨別和記憶能力的發展，即能夠區分熟人和陌生人，能夠清楚地記得不同人的臉；另一方面，也表現出孩子情緒和人際關系發展上的重大變化，表現了孩子對親人和對不熟悉人的不同態度。

在寶寶認生時期，當陌生人到來時，應讓孩子逐漸和陌生人接近，不要讓他一開始就單獨與陌生人在一起。只要父母能從容地面對陌生人，孩子便會很快消除顧慮，這是因為孩子對陌生人的好奇遠遠超過對陌生人的懼怕。
