選擇方法 the option method

選擇方法是 Kaufman夫婦所創, 他們的兒子 Raun 是自閉癥. Kaufman 在 Son-Rise 一書中描述教養Raun 的過程. 選擇方法被認為更像一種哲理. Kaufman夫婦認為自閉癥兒童是因為對外在環境感到困惑和不安, 企圖關閉, 因而導致腦部缺乏接收到社會互動發展所需要的刺激, 并增強了孤立的行為. 選擇方法的要點是讓社會互動快樂, 讓自閉癥兒童感受到和人的接觸比強迫或儀式性行為更有吸引力. 它也強調完全接納的重要性, 為了接近孩子, 大人甚至要參與孩子的活動, 并感受到孩子在活動中所感受到的樂趣.

選擇方法的效果只來家長的證詞和Kaufman 的書中的個案報告, 有些教師報告班上曾在選擇中心 (the Option Institute) 就讀過的自閉癥兒童在普通班有更多困難, 并且他們的儀式行為更難處理. 目前沒有任何對選擇方法療效的研究 (Heflin & Simpson, 1999; Howlin, 1998).
