名稱和定義

自閉癥是廣為社會大眾所熟悉的名詞, 但在臨床診斷或使用時, 以及研究探討或文獻上會出現一些名詞如廣泛性發展障礙 (Pervasive Developmental Disorder, PDD), 自閉癥系列障礙 (Autistic Spectrum Disorders, ASD), 亞斯伯格癥候群 (Asperger's Syndrome, AS), 非典型自閉癥 (Atypical Autism), 未分類廣泛性發展障礙 (Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified, PDD-NOS), 兒童期崩解癥 (Childhood Disintegrative Disorder), 雷特癥候群 (Rett's Syndrome)等. 雖然美國精神醫學學會 (American Psychiatric Association, 1994) 的精神疾病診斷與統計手冊第四版 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder, Fourth Edition, DSM-IV) 和世界衛生組織 (World Health Organization, 1992) 的國際疾病分類第十版 (International Classification of Diseases, ICD-10) 都將自閉癥及其相關障礙歸類在廣泛性發展障礙下, 但是仍然有些差別. 此外, 許多學者專家對是否能將某些障礙區分清楚仍有爭議. 雖然如此, 現在仍將上述名詞加以解釋。
