自閉癥的出現率

　　一般推估, 大約每一萬人中有四至五位自閉癥, 精神疾病診斷與統計手冊第四版指出約每萬人有2-5位患者 (孔繁鐘, 民86). 但是由于研究對象的地理分布, 人數, 篩檢方法, 及診斷標準等各方面的不同, 因此自閉癥的出現率有許多差異. Fombonne (1998, 引自 Howlin, 1998) 對自閉癥出現率的文獻探討中, 采用嚴格的診斷標準, 沒有重復的樣本, 在1966年至1996年間, 從10個國家的19篇研究中所得到的出現率約是每一萬人中有五位自閉癥. 而自閉癥系列癥礙 (autistic spectrum disorder) 的出現率則是90/10,000, 將近1% (Howlin, 1998). 在性別方面, 男性多于女性,各研究的結果如下:
